It doesn't seem to matter how hard we try, the holidays have a habit of sneaking up on us every year.  There are things that you could do now to avoid the same thing from occurring next year. 

Are there some decorations that you put out first every year?  If so, store them together in a separate box labeled "Open me first!"  Next year you will be able to quickly find just what you need.

Be sure to clearly label all of the containers for your holiday items, and store them in one location.  If you discover that you need more containers, this is the time of year that they go on sale.  Caution, there are storage containers for everything: wreaths, fragile ornaments and lights.  Determine your needs and measure before you go shopping.

Finally, update all those new addresses you received this year.  There is no time like the present, before they get buried in a box or pile of paper.
