A SIMPLE Guide to the Holidays

Recently we have shared our SIMPLE Time Management techniques with college freshmen and Realtors.  Just as each presentation was geared to a different audience, we will share the same techniques to guide you through the upcoming Holiday Season.

S  Start now!  You know the retailers started months ago, but most of us wait until the last minute and do things in a rush.  By investing time in small steps now you can reduce stress and probably even save some money.  Some of your tasks are time sensitive; i.e.you probably shouldn't start defrosting the turkey now; yet there are many other things that can be done ahead, like cooking or baking tasks that can be frozen until later.

I  Identify your current inventory of supplies.  Did you go shopping after the holidays were over last year to take advantage of reduced prices?  Do you remember whether or not you have enough paper goods, decor and gift wrapping supplies?  Have you purchased gifts during the year to save for that special someone?  Hopefully, all those gifts are stored in one place and you can quickly inventory what you already have. Take a few minutes now to assess everything.

M  Make a list of all the things you need to do for all of the celebrations in which you plan to participate before the end of the year, as well as the budget you intend to use.  Invitations, travel arrangements, food, gifts, baking, holiday cards and letter.......  Some of these things will need to be completed by specific dates; include those dates in the list.

P  Put all of those tasks on your calendar.  Start with the ones that have a specific 'due date'.  Some tasks will have multiple steps that will need to be taken before others (ie shopping for groceries before cooking and baking), and you need to enter these on your calendar as well.  Our advice is to work backward from the 'due date', and allow some extra time for unforseen events.  Also, try to group like things together; shopping, baking, gift wrapping.

L  Let go!  Are you having trouble with entering all of those tasks on the calendar?  Perhaps it is time to say NO to a few things.  What are some tasks on your list that can be deleted?  Perhaps you could delegate some tasks; ask others to bring food, or hire someone to clean oe organize the house.  Don't feel guilty about not being able to do it all.  The coming season does not need to be stressful.

E  Enjoy the holidays with family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving!
