How To Downsize and Prepare to Move

It seems that springtime has people moving and thinking about downsizing! We have helped several customers in the last few weeks and are about to help our daughters move into their first rental home as working adults! There are some tricks to moving which can help you save time and money...

Being organized about a move or downsizing is largely about time management.  Start early and plan to pack a little at a time.  Allow plenty of time to sort through cupboards and drawers.  Donate items for which you have duplicates or those you no longer use.  Shed those clothes that are no longer favorites, are faded or do not fit.  Going through old boxes of paper and memorabilia is a bit time consuming but will save you money by not moving heavy paper!  Shred items with personal information on them - check your local community for free shred days.

Review all of your furniture the same way as your cothes and other items. Make decisions about which ones will fit in your new home - take into consideration the decor of the new home, as well as the size.  Check with family members to see who might want items you will not be taking.  We love using colored dots to mark which furniture goes with you and assigning different colors to other friends and family.  You may find that you have items which are too nice to donate but you cannot use them.  On-line auctions are taking the place of in-home estate sales or garage sales. Companies who are providing on-line auctions take pictures of the items, run the auction and have supervised pick-up so you do not have people roaming through your house.  We can offer recommendations depending upon what items you have to sell.

We have a complete list of tips available for preparing your home for sale as well.  The tips are available on our website or by using this link

Not planning on moving yet but thinking about it? The above techniques can be used as a spring cleaning guide as well.  Thinning out our paper and things on a regular basis feels good and it will give you a jump start when you do need to move!
