The Beauty of Simplicity

Our recent clients have all struggled with too many things and too little time to enjoy those things - in some cases it was too many clothes, for others there were boxes never unpacked from the last move and a garage filled with toys from days gone by.  Each called us because they were tired of feeling "pulled down" by the wieght of their extra stuff.  Living more simply is their new goal!

It is usually overwhelming to think about tackling that mess in the garage or the closet filled with clothes that no longer fit or are out of style.  Yet, if the goal is to live more simply, tackle it you must!  Just start small; take one section of a closet first and work your way through the rod.  Do the same for a toy room or basement-pick one corner of the room and work your way around it a little at a time.   We donated 12 bags of clothes from a walk- in closet last week and the transformation was astounding!  The closet is now color coded and sorted by season.  Our client hugged us at the end of the day with a huge smile on her face!

Are you having difficulty fitting in all of your activities each day and feeling stressed instead of joyful?  Make a list of activities you participate in and rank them from 1-10 based upon how happy they make your life.  Perhaps it is time to simplify this list by eliminating things which are no longer fun and fulfilling.  Add to the list something you have put off doing that is calling out to you - reading more often, quilting, knitting, excercising etc..  A less chaotic life might be just what you need.

The goal of simplicity may expand into your work life.  A friend of mine is leaving a high powered corporate job to work for a not-for-profit organization in an effort to simplify her life and feel joy about sharing her expertise.  While not all of us may be able to afford such a drastic change, think about how you might alter something at work which would make you a happier employee or boss.  You may find that others around you will benefit from this change, too.

So, whether you need to simplify your life at home, in your extra-curricular activites, or in the workplace, there are beneifts to implementing change in any or all of these areas!  Start with one and see how much better you feel!  And remember, start small and don't worry if you don't finish a whole task in a single session!

                                     Happy Fall!
