Time for 'dostadning'?

It seems that every year or two an organizing book with a different approach, and a uniquely named method, comes along and is all the fad.  In 2014 it was The Life-Changing Majic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.  Author Marie Kondo presented the KonMari method for "...simplifying, organizing and storing."  There is a follow up book, Spark Joy: A Masterclass on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up, which provides a lot of instructions on folding your clothes, and other tips on organizing various areas of your home.  While we find her method to be extreme, we know that it has inspired many to get started on neglected areas.

The latest rage is something the Swedish call "dostadning", which is translated as "death cleaning".  The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter by Margareta Magnusson has incorporated family into the equation.  We often hear our customers say that they don't want to leave "a mess" for their children after they die, and this book is for them----or for anyone who may die one day.  What will be left behind, and who will be left to take care of it in some manner?  The author states "A loved one wishes to inherit nice things from you. Not all things from you."

Lately we have had some customers who could have benefitted from this book.  First was someone who had lived in the same house for 50+ years and was preparing to move to Florida.  We helped him process through years and years of items that were stored away by his deceased wife and four children.  On top of many life changes, he was confronted with an enormous amount of memories and decision making; not easy for someone in their 90s who lived alone.

We are currently helping a family prepare a home to be sold.  Three children were raised there, and they now live in other states and another country.  Both parents are deceased, and the children need to leave their jobs and families to travel and sort through all that has been left behind in a large home.  Many 'treasures' were hidden away, and there is no one available to tell them the meaning behind saving them.

After reading The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, one of our customers was inspired to tackle her garage and her 'scarey room' which had both been neglected for years.  She was delighted by the pleasure she found in "...putting things into the hands of people who want them."

This book has impacted our customers, and given us a new perspective on our own 'stuff'.  It's a quick read with a good approach to something we all think about, but often find difficult to face.

To hear more about these, and other organizing books, mark your calendar for May 24th at 7:00 PM when we will be sharing our favorites at Appletree Books in Cleveland Heights.  Watch future newsletters for details.

Happy Spring & Happy Organizing,

PS We volunteer with the Hoarding Connection of Cuyahoga County and are pleased to announce the 6th Annual Conference, OMG What Do I Do Now?  on Friday, April 13th.  We are bringing back Randy Frost, researcher and author of many books on organizing.  He is also the creator of the Buried In Treasure groups that the HCCC sponsors.  We will also be presenting that day.  Registration is now open and CEUs are available for building inspectors, counselors, social workers and sanitarians.
