When Life Gets In The Way

"You only work with hoarders, right?"

"Do I have to be a hoarder to work with a Professional Organizer?"

"Are most of your customers hoarders?"

The answer to all of these questions is

Yes, we occassionaly work with individuals who hoard.  But almost all of the individuals we work with have not been able to put things away because they have experienced a major life event, good or bad, where the normal routine got out of control.  We all know that we should put items away after we use them, process the mail daily, and file paper away promptly, but it really doesn't work like that.....  Life really does have a tendancy to get in the way.

Good events would be the birth of a baby, moving into a new home, getting married and combining households, starting a new job, remodeling the home, going on vacation, hosting a party or event, etc.  All causes for celebration!  At the same time, they all have the potential for creating a set back in how things normally get done, get put away, and get planned.

Less happy events that we have seen upset a normal routine are the death of a loved one, divorce, illness, car accident, taking on additional responsibilities at work, identity theft, etc.  When experiencing one of these, time is needed in other areas of life and again there is the set back on how things normally get done, get put away, and get planned.

So, the result of all this is the mail piles up on the dining room table, papers do not get filed, items that have been recently used do not return to their intended homes, bills don't get paid on time, appointments are missed, and more stress is created.  At some point, the feeling of being  overwhelmed sets in, more stress is created and it is unknown how to get back on the right track.

We both know how life can get in the way......  Personally we have recently experienced some of the good events and some of the less happy events listed above.  This really does upset the normal routines, and it takes some time to get back on track.  Less enjoyable activites take a back seat to the more pressing matters of getting caught up on things.

What can you do?

  • Devote scheduled blocks of time to get things under control.  This could be 15, 30, 60 minutes to focus on one project.  Note that we did not say to complete the project----just make some progress.
  • Enlist co-workers, family members or a friend to help.  Involving others will get the project done more quickly, will keep you accountable, and may even turn a dreaded task into something fun.
  • Delegate whenever possible.  Sure, the person you delegate to may not do things exactly as you would do....oh well.....  Let go of that perfectionism and the tasks will at least get partially completed.
  • Contact us.  We have been there.....  And with 14 years of experience, and thousands of hours helping others in similar situations, we know how to help and move things along quickly.

We hope you all of your life events are happy ones and that you and yours

will have an enjoyable 4th of July celebration,

JoEllen & Muffy
